What app passwords are, and why you need one
Why providers ask for a separate password for mail apps, and why that's safer.
An app password is a long, random password your provider creates for one app. Gmail, iCloud, Yahoo, AOL, Fastmail and Zoho all ask for one when you add your account to a mail app like Bloop.email.
Why not your main password?
Your main password usually comes with two-factor sign-in, which a mail app connecting in the background can't complete. An app password is made for exactly that job.
It's also safer. An app password only works for mail, it never reveals your main password, and you can revoke it from your provider's security page at any time without changing anything else.
Where Bloop.email keeps it
In your Mac's keychain, the same encrypted store macOS uses for your own passwords. It's never sent to us. Removing an account deletes it from the keychain.
